Faithful in the Private Places - Mark 10: 1-12

Scripture Reading

Mark 10: 1-12 (ESV)

Teaching About Divorce

1 And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.

2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” 5 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ 7 ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Reflection:

When the Pharisees question Jesus about divorce, Jesus takes them back beyond legal arguments to God's original design for marriage—covenant, unity, and faithfulness.

For those of us who lead in ministry, this passage reminds us that God cares deeply about the relationships and commitments that exist away from the platform.

It is possible to be highly gifted publicly while neglecting what matters privately.

Our marriages, families, friendships, and closest relationships should not receive whatever is left over after ministry gets the best of us.

And for those who carry pain, divorce, or broken relationships in their story, this passage should not become a weapon of shame. The same Jesus who calls us toward faithfulness also meets broken people with truth, grace, healing, and restoration.

Our worship must come from lives that increasingly reflect the faithfulness of the God we sing about.

Personal Questions:

  1. Are the people closest to me receiving the best of me or what is left of me?
  2. Is there any disconnect between my public ministry and my private relationships?
  3. Where do I need God's wisdom, healing, or grace in my relationships?

Team Questions:

  1. Why is relational health important for people serving in ministry?
  2. How can ministry unintentionally compete with marriage or family?
  3. How can we uphold biblical truth while extending genuine grace to people with painful stories?

Prayer:

Father, You are completely faithful. Help me reflect Your faithfulness in my closest relationships. Guard me from allowing ministry to become an excuse for neglecting the people You have entrusted to me. Bring healing where there is hurt and wisdom where relationships are difficult. Amen.
