Take Up Your Cross - Mark 8:34–9:1

Scripture Reading

Mark 8:34–9:1 (ESV)

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

9 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

Reflection:

Jesus doesn’t soften His call: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” He talks about losing life to find it, not being ashamed of Him, and the reality of His coming glory.

For worship leaders, following Jesus isn’t just about leading powerful services; it’s about daily cross-bearing—dying to self, laying down ego, surrendering preferences, and living for His kingdom.

This doesn’t mean burnout or self-hatred. It means choosing His will over our own, His reputation over ours, His glory over our comfort.

Personal Questions:

  1. What does “taking up my cross” look like in my everyday life and ministry?
  2. Are there specific things Jesus is asking me to deny or lay down?
  3. In what ways am I tempted to be ashamed or quiet about Him?

Team Questions:

  1. How can we keep the cross at the center of our worship and our lives as leaders?
  2. What are some healthy, practical ways we can “deny ourselves” for the sake of others?
  3. How does this passage shape our idea of success in ministry?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You carried the cross for me. Help me to carry mine for You. Show me where I need to deny myself, and give me courage to follow You even when it costs me. Let my worship and my life point to Your cross and Your glory. Amen.
