From the Inside Out - Mark 7: 14-23
Scripture Reading
Mark 7: 14-23 (ESV)
What Defiles a Person
14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” 17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled? (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
Reflection:
Jesus overturns the religious thinking of His day by saying that it’s not what goes into a person that defiles them, but what comes out of the heart. Evil thoughts, pride, envy, slander—all of these flow from within.
For worship leaders, this hits close to home. We can look “put together” on stage while battles rage inside—jealousy, comparison, resentment, pride. The danger isn’t just what people see; it’s what we allow to grow unchecked in our hearts.
The good news: Jesus doesn’t expose our hearts to shame us, but to heal and transform us. Real worship starts with inviting Him to do His work on the inside.
Personal Questions:
- What attitudes or patterns in my heart do I need to bring into the light with Jesus?
- Am I more concerned with my image before people or my integrity before God?
- Where have I seen God already change my heart from the inside out?
Team Questions:
- How can our team culture encourage honesty and heart-level growth, not just skill improvement?
- What are some “heart dangers” worship leaders are especially vulnerable to?
- How can we pray for each other more specifically in this area?
Prayer:
Jesus, You see my heart more clearly than I see myself. Please reveal anything in me that doesn’t honor You. Cleanse my motives, my thoughts, and my desires so my worship is real from the inside out. Amen.
