Preparing the Way
Preparing the Way
Scripture Readings (ESV): Mark 1:1–8 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Reflection:
John the Baptist understood his role clearly—he was not the center of the story. His calling was to prepare hearts, remove obstacles, and point people toward Jesus.
Worship ministry works the same way. We don’t create transformation; we create space for God to move. Preparation, humility, and repentance are not optional—they are essential.
When worship leaders focus more on making room for Jesus than drawing attention to themselves, the gospel becomes unmistakably clear.
Personal Questions:
- Where might I be allowing distractions to crowd my heart?
- How do I prepare spiritually before leading others in worship?
- Is there any pride or self-focus God is asking me to surrender?
Team Questions:
- What does “preparing the way” look like for our worship team practically?
- How do we ensure Jesus stays central and not our performance?
- What rhythms help us stay spiritually ready, not just musically prepared?
Prayer:
Lord, search my heart and clear anything that distracts me from You. Teach me to serve with humility and obedience. Prepare me so my worship points clearly to Jesus and not myself. Make my life a pathway for Your presence. Amen.
